Power Yoga
Power yoga is a westernized term for a practice based
on Ashtanga-style yoga. It is a much more strenuous practice than simple
stretching and is an outstanding method for gaining increased strength
and flexibility. This method has become increasingly popular in America
over the past few decades.
Power yoga is practiced by putting
the body through a series of poses that are designed to stretch and
elongate the muscles while increasing strength through natural resistance.
When combined with correct, consistent breathing techniques, this exercise
greatly increases core temperature, and produces an intense sweat that
helps purify the body. Since there is no strict series of poses to follow
for this method of practice, the workouts can vary quite a bit.
Most quality gyms offer power yoga classes. These classes are an ideal
way to begin yoga training as they offer first-hand interaction with
a trained practitioner. In addition, there are many books and DVD's
available for beginner and advanced students.
