Hello, thank you for visiting dallaspoweryoga.com. Our site is dedicated to finding and sharing the latest information on the equipment, techniques and benefits of yoga. This site is here only for informational purposes. We do not support or endorse any particular brand, product or method.

Although the exact time yoga began is unknown, archeologists have linked the findings of stone carvings of figures in yoga positions at sites in the Indus Valley to assume that this ancient civilization practiced yoga and meditation thousands of years ago.  Yoga did not get started in the U.S. until the late 1800’s, and didn’t become popular until the late 1960’s. As the benefits of yoga became widely known, its popularity increased. Today the popularity of yoga continues to grow.

The word yoga comes from the Sanskrit word “yuj” meaning “to unite or integrate,” referring to yoga’s purpose of harmonizing the body, mind and spirit. The ancient Yogis determined that in order for these three things to become united, emotion, action and intelligence must be in balance. They decided upon a three part formula to maintaining this formula that is still used today. The three main yoga structures of yoga are exercise, breathing and meditation.

In yoga, the body is viewed as the primary instrument that enables us to function and evolve in the world. Yoga
exercises are designed to improve circulation, stimulate the abdominal organs and put pressure on the body’s glandular system, all of which are believed to result in maintaining and improving the body’s overall health.

Breathing techniques were based on the idea that breath is the source of life for the body. Students of yoga learn to control their breath through focus. As they increase their breath control and strengthen their bodies they prepare themselves for the final step – meditation.

The idea of meditation is to focus the activities of mind, not to have a “blank” mind, but to have a “quiet” mind.  Yoga teachers and learners aim to master these three concepts in order to give themselves a clear and stress free mind along with a strong and healthy body.

Yoga is great exercise for almost all adults (please note that pregnant women and growing children are discouraged from practicing yoga). Because of the non-strenuous nature of yoga, it is suitable for most adults with physical limitations and is even recommended for those with back pain, heart disease arthritis, depression, and other chronic conditions.

If you are looking to start practicing yoga, or just give yoga a try, there are a few good ways to get started. The best ways to begin is to either take a class at a local gym, find a great DVD or video that enables you to try it at home or find a book that teaches you the elements of yoga and shows instructions for various yoga exercises and positions.

In order to get started you will also need the right equipment. Getting a yoga mat and proper workout attire is a good place to start. Yoga mats are specifically designed to make yoga more comfortable and effective. When choosing a mat find one that will comfortably accommodate your body size. You should not slip around much on your mat, as they are designed to hold you in place while holding various positions. Yoga clothing should be comfortable and should not constrict any type of movement. Specific yoga clothing is very flexible and is used by many as loungewear because of its comfort. T-shirts and sweatpants will work fine as well.

Other yoga equipment that will help you get started includes yoga mats, blocks, stretching bands, and pillows. For more information on these items plus more tips, please read through the different pages and links of this Website. Thank you for visiting our site. Namaste.
